SDLP MLA BURNS: SADNESS AT DEATH OF SDLP STALWART

SDLP South Antrim MLA Thomas Burns has spoken of his sadness at the death of Michael Cole – former SDLP Mayor of Newry and Mourne – who collapsed and died while refereeing a GAA match in County Down.

Mr Burns said: “Michael Cole was a man who showed instinctive care, natural charm and utter decency.

“As a politician he showed purpose rather than pose.

“In his year as Mayor of Newry and Mourne he was delighted to celebrate the efforts and achievements of communities, companies and causes in the District.

“He was a man of modesty and honesty, and these qualities reinforced the principles and determination which he brought to public life.

“His untimely death robs us all of a dedicated and decent public servant.

“He was steeped in community involvement which epitomised his commitment to the GAA which reflected his active pride in his community, his county and his country.

“We all feel shock and sadness on his untimely death and feel for his family who have lost a man of such care, compassion and commitment.”
