MLA BURNS:
PPS14 HASN’T GONE AWAY, YOU KNOW
SDLP South Antrim MLA Thomas Burns said the PPS14
rural housing ban is alive and well and being
enforced by the Sinn Fein-DUP coalition even though
Martin McGuinness is claiming to have stopped it.
He said: “A Sinn Fein leaflet commemorating the Good
Friday Agreement contains a fanciful list of
supposed achievements, but there is one that really
takes the biscuit. Martin McGuinness claims that he
has stopped PPS14. Someone is going to have to tell
him that the ban on rural housing is still there. It
hasn’t gone away, you know. There are sons and
daughters of farmers everywhere who can tell him all
about it. The PPS14 housing ban is still in place,
still being enforced by his DUP colleague Arlene
Foster, still driving up the prices of houses and
sites and causing incredible hardship.
“Martin McGuinness’ claim is a fantasy, a fairy
story on a par with Gerry Adams being let out of
school early to found the Civil Rights Association.
There are other fanciful claims in the leaflet, such
as Conor Murphy having scrapped the ‘Double Water
Tax’ even though he hasn’t actually taken a decision
yet and seems to be doing his utmost to avoid taking
one.
“But the PPS14 claim is so blatant, so demonstrably
false that the question must be asked: was the
Deputy First Minister asleep back in October when
Arlene Foster said PPS14 was to continue? We may be
moving from the Chuckle Brothers to the Brothers
Grim, but there must be a limit to fantasy and fairy
story. PPS14 should be scrapped and must be scrapped
and has no backing in the Assembly, but we have to
actually get rid of it in the real world and not
just in the Deputy First Minister’s imagination.”
