MLA BURNS:
KEEN TO DO BUSINESS WITH U.S. INVESTORS
South Antrim MLA Thomas Burns has said the SDLP has
told American investors during St Patrick’s Day
celebrations at the White House that Northern
Ireland is keen to do business ahead of May’s US/NI
investment conference.
The SDLP delegation who met with George Bush and
other dignitaries included Social Development
Minister Margaret Ritchie and South Belfast MP
Alasdair McDonnell.
Mr Burns added that there was a sound economic
framework in Northern Ireland which he was sure
would prove attractive to potential investors.
He said, “Strengthening the economy and fighting for
social justice are central to the SDLP as we go
forward in 2008.
“The economy is and must remain a priority for the
Executive. The establishment of a sound economic
framework is essential for any prospective business
thinking of investing here.
“The SDLP is committed to working with the business
community at home and abroad. We are determined to
take on board the views and the experience of those
at the business coal face in order to help stimulate
and expand economic opportunities within Northern
Ireland.
“We are determined to work to ensure the necessary
conditions and measures are in place to promote and
encourage economic development and growth. Our
objective is to cut through the various obstacles
stunting economic growth and help deliver the right
conditions for companies to flourish, generating
benefits for all.”
He also added that he local businesses must take
‘every opportunity’ they can to build international
contacts and that Northern Ireland was still were
suffering from a ‘skills shortage’.
“It is vitally important we build relationships with
decision makers, organisations and investors from
the US. The Investment Conference in May represents
a key opportunity to build our own local economy.
“There is a also pressing need to increase the
quantity and quality of skills available. A proper
skilled and trained workforce will help attract
direct foreign investment, promote private sector
growth and in turn create more jobs.“
He concluded by stating, “At the end of the day what
this is really all about is the business of
devolution – and that is about improving the quality
of locals people’s lives.”
