He said, “Strengthening the economy and fighting for social justice are central to the SDLP as we go forward in 2008.

“The economy is and must remain a priority for the Executive. The establishment of a sound economic framework is essential for any prospective business thinking of investing here.

“We are determined to work to ensure the necessary conditions and measures are in place to promote and encourage economic development and growth. Our objective is to cut through the various obstacles stunting economic growth and help deliver the right conditions for companies to flourish, generating benefits for all.”

He also added that he local businesses must take ‘every opportunity’ they can to build international contacts and that Northern Ireland was still were suffering from a ‘skills shortage’.

“It is vitally important we build relationships with decision makers, organisations and investors from the US. The Investment Conference in May represents a key opportunity to build our own local economy.

“There is a also pressing need to increase the quantity and quality of skills available. A proper skilled and trained workforce will help attract direct foreign investment, promote private sector growth and in turn create more jobs.“
